Most mistakes in Prelims happen because of cleverly designed options or trap options, not lack of knowledge. UPSC often frames choices that look familiar but contain extreme words like “always,” “only,” or “all.” These are usually signals to pause and re-check.

Another common pattern is half-true statements. One part of the option may be correct while the second part is subtly wrong. Read each statement independently instead of assuming it’s correct because it sounds familiar.
Finally, improve this skill through mock and PYQ analysis. Review why you picked wrong answers and note recurring patterns. The more you observe these trends, the easier it becomes to eliminate misleading choices and protect your score.
