Mains Answer Writing: When Should You Start?

Mains answer writing should begin as soon as you complete the basics of a subject, not after finishing the entire syllabus. Waiting for “perfect preparation” only delays improvement. Once you understand core concepts from NCERTs and standard books, you are ready to start.

In the beginning, focus on structure over perfection. Write 1–2 answers a day from previous year questions related to the topic you are studying. This builds clarity about question demand, directive words, and answer framing. Mains answer writing is a skill, and skills improve only with practice.

Starting early also helps you identify gaps in understanding. When you try to write, you realize what you actually know and what you only think you know. That awareness strengthens your preparation.

The right time to begin mains answer writing is now, alongside your preparation. Consistency matters more than timing. The earlier you start, the sharper your answers become.
