Writing within the word limit in UPSC Mains is about discipline and structure, not cutting content randomly. Most aspirants exceed the limit because they start writing without a clear plan. If you think for 30–40 seconds before writing, half the problem is solved.

First, break the answer mentally: introduction (2–3 lines), body (4–6 key points), conclusion (1–2 lines). When you decide the number of points beforehand, you naturally control length. Avoid long paragraphs. Use short, sharp sentences and precise keywords.
Second, focus on relevance. Every line must address the demand of the question. Remove repetition, generic statements, and unnecessary background. Depth does not mean writing more — it means explaining smartly in limited words.
Finally, practice writing with a timer. Over time, you’ll develop a natural sense of how much 150 or 250 words actually look like on paper. Word discipline improves with consistent practice, not theory.
